No matter how hard you try, you unintentionally keep up with the Kardashians and this year was no different. Bruce publically transitioned into Caitlyn. Kylie Kardashian made a splash with her lip injections. Kendall Kardashian made a name for herself in the fashion world, ending her year with a pair of “wings” at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show. Kim-ye (Kim Kardashian and Kanye West) welcomed Saint West (we were half-expecting them to name him South) into the world in December as well. It’s been a big year for the growing clan who slowly warms their way into your hearts and reluctantly and relentlessly occupies your thoughts. Why can’t we ignore them? You unintentionally know Kylie is dating Tyga and Kourtney and Scott are taking a break. You’re so proud of Khloe and her super hott revenge bod.
There are two different kinds of fans (which may overlap a bit), there’s the Keeping Up with the Kardashians (KUWTK) fans and then the Googlers/Social Media Stalker fans. If you watch the show, regrettably it’s funny. They are crazy and overly indulgent family, but they are funny in sometimes a crude and disturbing way.
The binge usually goes like this: the show usually comes on in a marathon. It’s Friday night, you have no plans, and the only thing on is KUWTK. You turn on an episode, planning to make fun of them and “those” kinds of people that watch the show. You end up finding them oddly relatable and funny. You tell yourself, I’ll watch just one more, and I’ll find something better after it. You crack open a tub of Ben & Jerry’s, then next they you know you’re seven episodes deep.
As far as social media goes, the family literally owns. Here’s just the Instagram breakdown:
More than half of these people will claim to “hate-follow” the clan. To quote the once-popular Lady Sovereign song “love or hate me, it’s still obsession.” The secret may be relatability, no matter where you are in your life, there is a Kardashian/Jenner for you.
Pick your Kardashian:
Kylie Kardashian: younger teen, dating possibly an older and slightly controversial man, and really feeling the pressure to look perfect and adhere to society’s standards of beauty.
Kendall Kardashian: hard working young adult, trying to make a name for yourself, often made fun of and not taken seriously as a professional, and always seen as a child.
Kourtney Kardashian: loves being a parent, significant other is a good parent but a bad partner, likes the spotlight but often shies away from it, very sarcastic and doesn’t take life too seriously.
Kim Kardashian: loves fashion, make up, and pop culture, dating someone who is as into themselves as you are, at the end of a lot of thrown shade.
Khloe Kardashian: always lived in the shadow of a sibling but suddenly blossomed, very tough and has a great sense of humor.
Kris Kardashian: great sense of business, always the “parent” in a group of friends, maybe relate to Kris on a age business, being the head of a family on your own.
Bruce: the dude who has to deal with too much estrogen.
Caitlyn: someone who finally accepts their authentic self and introduces it to the world.
Rob: shies away from the limelight, loves the K-Dashs but isn’t on social media 24/7 and gets really “over” pop culture.
It could be a matter of curiosity. They are very interesting people, with over-the-top lives most of us could only dream of. They have a unique family dynamic thanks to the spotlight put on them. They have been living behind the camera for so long. They have been expertly marketed; the Kardashian name has been turned into a brand. They draw you in. Kim can put her name behind Quick Weight Loss and drive up sales astronomically. We naturally want to be a part of it.
Being a K-Dash fan does not automatically make you shallow and superficial. It seems rather natural indeed. They live such extravagant lives that you can’t help but wonder and pontificate on. While there may be a better way to spend 40 minutes otherwise, we are not aware of it.
